Castlebar’s status as ‘Europe’s luckiest town’ continues with Lotto win

Castlebar’s status as Europe’s luckiest town continues after it was announced that Ireland’s biggest lotto prize has been won there.

The €19.06m ticket was won in the city on Saturday night. This is the fourth time the jackpot has been won at Castlebar and it’s not even the biggest win.

In July 2019, the EuroMillions jackpot winning ticket worth €29 million was picked up by a syndicate who purchased the ticket from the city’s Garryduff XL store.

The first Castlebar EuroMillions jackpot was won in April 2014 when a ticket worth €15 million was purchased at Staunton’s Costcutter Express on Main Street.

Less than two years ago, the ticket for the €17 million EuroMillions jackpot was sold at Castlebar. This ticket was bought in Mulroy’s shop in London.

Manager Alan Mulroy said he never found out the identity of the previous Lotto jackpot winner.

There is a “big buzz”, he says around Castlebar and the volume of sales for last Saturday’s “must see” draw was greater than in its 28 years of selling lottery tickets.

He puts up the ‘Welcome to Castlebar, the luckiest town in Europe’ sign on Monday in the hope that lightning will strike twice and his will be the winning store again.

“One in two people were playing the lottery this time around. I had to go out the door to manage the queues. Whichever store wins, it will be good for them. It’s the busiest we’ve ever been,” he said.

Mr Mulroy added that he had heard ‘nothing’ about who might have won it.

The county’s perennial search for Sam Maguire is perhaps one of sport’s longest and most unlucky sagas, although having a town in the county that won €80million in lottery prizes brings its compensations.

The elusive Lotto jackpot winner has yet to come forward and the National Lottery has asked players in town to check their tickets.

The details of the winning store will be officially revealed on Wednesday morning.

The winning numbers for Saturday were: 02, 09, 16, 30, 37, 40 and the bonus was 23. It was a quick pick combination.

As the Lotto jackpot was capped at €19.06 million, funds from the Saturday night draw that would typically go to the jackpot were transferred to the next highest tier at which there was a winner.

The ‘Will be Won’ event saw 149 winners at Match 5 + Bonus level who split almost €5.5m and they will now claim €36,687 each.
